Israeli Rabbi David Periuf Detained and Released Quickly at Miami Airport Over Old Traffic Warrant

Rabbi David Periuf was arrested upon landing at Miami International Airport last weekend while arriving with his family for a vacation. The arrest stemmed from an outstanding warrant related to a traffic ticket he received several years ago in Miami. According to reports, a friend who had promised to handle the ticket with local authorities failed to do so, leading to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

Upon arrival, police handcuffed Rabbi Periuf, removed his kippah and tzitzit, and took him into custody, an experience he described as humiliating. Israeli businessmen Israel Gottlieb and Mark Rosenberg intervened with local enforcement officials, resulting in Rabbi Periuf's release after only a few hours. He noted that such a swift release was unusual, as detainees typically remain in custody for 24 hours before appearing before a judge. Rabbi Periuf expressed gratitude for what he called divine assistance in securing his release before the Sabbath.

The incident highlights the complications that can arise from unresolved legal matters abroad, even for visitors arriving for short stays. Rabbi Periuf's quick release was facilitated by local contacts and was an exception to standard procedures.
