Israeli Rabbi David Periuf Detained and Jailed 24 Hours at Miami Airport Over Old Warrant

Rabbi David Periuf, an Israeli public figure known for his outreach work, was detained and jailed for 24 hours last weekend upon arriving at Miami International Airport with his family for a vacation. The arrest stemmed from an outstanding warrant issued years earlier after a local traffic violation in Miami was not resolved due to a friend’s failure to handle the matter with authorities. Upon landing, Periuf was handcuffed, taken to jail in prisoner attire, and had his kippah and tzitzit removed, which he described as humiliating.

Thanks to the intervention of Israeli businessmen Israel Gottlieb and Mark Rosenberg, who liaised with local enforcement, Periuf was released after several hours, earlier than the usual 24-hour detention period before a judge hearing. In an interview with Kikar HaShabbat, Periuf recounted the ordeal and expressed disbelief at the swift release, attributing it to divine assistance. He criticized the authorities for their harsh treatment and suggested there were unseen influences behind the incident.

This incident highlights the complications that can arise from unresolved legal issues abroad and the challenges faced by travelers, even prominent religious figures. Periuf’s experience underscores the importance of addressing outstanding legal matters before international travel to avoid detention or legal complications.
