Trump Says U.S.-Iran Understanding Will Be Signed Tomorrow
President Donald Trump said the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States will be signed digitally tomorrow, and he claimed the deal will lead to Iran’s nuclear program being diluted and destroyed, either inside Iran or in the United States. He did not say the enriched uranium would necessarily be removed from Iranian territory.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said, “My deal is exactly the opposite of Obama’s deal, a wall against nuclear weapons.” He added, “Our relationship with Iran is very different and much better than that of previous administrations. No money will change hands.”
Senior administration officials said the more Iran freezes its nuclear program, shuts reactors and dilutes enriched uranium, the more sanctions relief and frozen funds it will receive. Iran, however, says the nuclear issue belongs to a future negotiation and not to the memorandum due to be signed.
Tehran has also not, at least in principle, backed away from its demand to collect fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said last night that Iranian reports about the talks were “fake” and called the Iranian negotiators “disrespectful people.” U.S. officials said Iran’s leaks are for domestic purposes, aimed at satisfying hardline elements in the regime, and do not reflect the understandings reached.
