Trump Says Iran Deal Will Block Nuclear Weapons and Open Hormuz Strait
U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday on Truth Social that his emerging agreement with Iran is a barrier to nuclear weapons. He claimed Iran “already do not want nuclear weapons” and said they will not obtain them by purchase, development, or any other means.
Trump said the deal is expected to be signed on Sunday and that, once it is signed, the Strait of Hormuz will be open to everyone. He contrasted the terms with previous U.S. administrations, saying relations with Iran are now “completely different” and better than before, and adding that unlike the “hundreds of billions” he said Barack Obama gave Tehran, including $1.7 billion in cash, “not a single dollar” will change hands here.
He also said that later, “when everything calms down,” the U.S. will enter and collect the nuclear material, which he described as buried deep under granite mountains, and dilute and destroy it either in Iran or in the United States. Trump credited the “wonderful B-2 bombers” and their “brilliant pilots” for forcing the material underground.
Trump said the United States hopes to work with Iran and the wider Middle East for years to come, and expressed hope that the process will end quickly, easily and smoothly. He added that if it does not, the U.S. has an “ultimate alternative,” though he said he hopes it will never need to be used again.
