The G7 summit opened in France, and the emerging agreement with Iran immediately dominated the agenda, even though the leaders are also expected to discuss the war in Ukraine later and have invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend. Much of the attention again focused on U.S. President Donald Trump, who used his opening remarks to describe the understandings reached with Iran, including a promise that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen quickly.

Trump said, “We have a deal that is a fair deal. It’s a good deal.” He also stressed that the United States is “not investing any money in Iran,” rejecting reports that Washington would allow the creation of an investment fund for Iran in exchange for the regime signing the deal. “Those rumors that were going around yesterday are ridiculous, we have no commitment to invest money in Iran,” he said.

Trump also addressed Lebanon, saying Israel has been fighting Hezbollah “for too long, and too many people have been killed.” Asked whether he was frustrated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisions, Trump said the two have a “great relationship,” but added that Netanyahu must be “more responsible regarding Lebanon,” and that he did not like the strike because “it was too much.” He added, “Without the U.S., there would not even be Israel, because no other president was willing to do what I did.”

Earlier in the day, Trump met with Qatar’s ruler and said Iran will never have nuclear weapons, warning that if it did, the country would “suffer unimaginable responses.” He said preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons was the main goal of the war, and also “the reason I agreed to sign the deal.”
