Trump Says Iran Deal Could Be Signed as Soon as Tomorrow
President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that a deal between the United States and Iran is expected to be signed as soon as Monday. He described the agreement as a “wall against nuclear weapons,” saying Iran no longer wants a nuclear bomb and will not obtain one “through purchase, development or any other form of acquisition.”
Trump also warned that if the deal is not signed, Washington has a military alternative. He said that once the agreement is signed, the Strait of Hormuz will reopen to all traffic, and he stressed that unlike past administrations, no money will be transferred to Iran. He referred to Barack Obama’s payments to Iran, including $1.7 billion in cash.
The president also addressed Iran’s highly enriched uranium, saying the United States will eventually collect it and destroy it. In his post, he said the material will be gathered “when the time is right,” and destroyed either in Iran or in the United States, using B-2 bombers and their pilots. He closed by saying he looks forward to working with Iran and the wider Middle East, while warning that if the deal fails, “the ultimate alternative” remains available.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan’s foreign minister told Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister that the electronic signing of the U.S.-Iran agreement was set for Monday. Separately, a senior American official said Trump will meet Middle Eastern leaders in France on Tuesday, including separate meetings with leaders from Qatar, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not expected to attend. The official also said a Britain-led and France-led coalition plans to help clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz after it reopens.
