FIFA Forces Egypt to Remove Stars From World Cup Kits
FIFA has ordered Egypt to revise its 2026 World Cup uniforms just two days before the team’s opening match against Belgium in Seattle on Monday at 22:00, broadcast on Sport1. The Egyptian Football Association was told to remove the seven stars above the national crest and to change the shirt numbers from gold to white.
FIFA said that only world champions are allowed to wear stars on their shirts at the World Cup. Egypt’s stars represent its seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, won in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, more than any other African team. But because Egypt has never won the World Cup, the governing body said the stars cannot remain on the tournament kit.
The color change is a visibility issue. FIFA explained that gold names and numbers are harder to read on television broadcasts, so the team must replace them with white lettering. Egyptian officials are already working on an updated version of the kit, which is expected to be ready before kickoff against Belgium.
