FIFA Orders Egypt to Remove Shirt Stars at World Cup
The Egyptian Football Association said on Saturday that the seven stars long shown on Egypt’s national team shirt will be removed for the current World Cup, after a demand from FIFA. The shirt has featured the stars for years as a reference to Egypt’s seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, more than any other team in Africa.
According to the association, FIFA sent a letter saying that, during the World Cup, national teams may not display stars on their kits if those stars represent continental titles. Teams are allowed to use stars only to mark World Cup victories. As a result, Egypt must drop the stars that have been part of its identity and history on the Africa Cup stage.
The association also said FIFA asked for another kit change, replacing the shirt numbers from gold to white to improve visibility and clarity during matches.
Egypt is in Group 7 with Belgium, Iran and New Zealand. It will open its World Cup campaign against Belgium on Monday at 22:00.
