Israeli ADIR Labs Launches DashCam to Document Hate Speech in Online Gaming
Online gamers frequently encounter toxic behavior including insults, racism, and antisemitism, often accepted as a background noise in competitive play. Israeli nonprofit ADIR Labs, after two years of research and development, has introduced DashCam, a dashboard camera tool created with Modulate.ai that works across all games to identify, document, and report toxic and hateful behavior without interrupting gameplay.
Unlike conventional reporting tools, DashCam relies initially on players to trigger recordings of offensive incidents by pressing a hotkey, capturing screen images, audio, voice chat, and microphone input. These recordings are then compiled into a file with contextual details for review. AI models will later be trained on this human-curated database to better distinguish hate speech from gaming slang and jokes, addressing a major challenge in automated detection.
ADIR Labs emphasizes that game studios want to reduce toxic speech as it harms player retention and community health, but current reporting systems lack comprehensive documentation, making it difficult to assess the problem's scope. DashCam aims to build a transparent evidence library accessible to developers and players alike, with users able to track the status of their reports. The system also discourages false reports by rewarding usage rather than volume and requires recorded proof for each complaint.
Since the outbreak of conflict on October 7, ADIR Labs notes an increase in hateful speech but highlights the scarcity of reliable data due to the ephemeral nature of voice chats and in-game interactions. The project addresses hate beyond antisemitism, including racism, sexism, and homophobia. Developers are also exploring user control over what data is recorded to alleviate privacy concerns.
ADIR Labs founder Muriel Lotan stresses the goal is not to immediately change gaming culture but to provide accurate data and tools for players, regulators, and the industry to better understand and combat toxicity. The nonprofit was founded in memory of Lotan's nephew, Adir Masika, who was killed heroically in a terror attack, and focuses on technological solutions to fight online hate. Gaming was identified as a critical area due to its anonymous, unsupervised environment and weak enforcement mechanisms.
