Israeli Reserve Soldiers Can Begin Legal Internships Without Completing All Degree Requirements

The Israeli Knesset's Constitution Committee has approved a temporary regulation easing requirements for law students serving in the military reserves. This measure allows students in their final year of law school who served at least 59 days in reserve duty between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026, to start their legal internships even if they have not completed up to four courses and four exams required for graduation.

The decision came after adjustments to the eligibility criteria: the required reserve service period was extended to cover a full year until August 31, 2026, while the minimum days of service needed were reduced from 90 to 59. This change aims to accommodate students whose reserve duties overlap with exam periods, which can disrupt their ability to complete academic requirements on time.

Dana Blum from the Israel Bar Association emphasized that the relief targets a specific group of reservists who served significant time and that the allowance is limited to those missing no more than four courses and exams. Committee Chair MK Simcha Rothman highlighted the importance of timing, noting that even 30 to 60 days of reserve duty during exam periods can severely impact students' academic progress. MK Tali Gottlieb supported lowering the eligibility threshold, acknowledging the substantial burden of 50 days of reserve service during studies.

This temporary regulation applies to students beginning their internships between September 1 and December 31, 2026, providing a crucial accommodation for reservists balancing military obligations and legal education.
