Google Launches New Feature to Delete Messages for Both Sides on Android

Google has introduced a highly anticipated feature in its Google Messages app that allows users to delete sent messages from both their own device and the recipient's device. This update, enabled by the RCS Universal Profile v2.7 protocol, finally brings Android users a functionality similar to what WhatsApp, Telegram, and iPhone users have had for some time. When deleting a message in a supported chat, users can now choose between "Delete for me" or "Delete for everyone," with the latter removing the message from all participants' devices.

To use this feature, both sender and recipient must have the latest version of Google Messages and be connected via RCS. The feature works in both private and group chats but does not apply to traditional SMS or MMS messages, which will only be deleted locally. However, there are important limitations: the feature does not work with iPhone users due to incompatible protocols, and users have a 24-hour window after sending to delete messages for everyone.

Google cautions that this feature is not foolproof, as recipients can still read or screenshot messages before deletion. Therefore, users are advised to think carefully before sending messages. This update marks a significant improvement in message control for Android users but comes with practical constraints to consider.
