IDF Drafts New Discipline Code Amid Sharp Decline in Soldier Conduct

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have identified a significant drop in discipline among soldiers in the field after nearly three years of continuous combat operations. This decline has prompted the military to develop a new official "Foundations Document" aimed at redefining and clarifying army values and orders. The initiative comes as the country approaches national elections, with the document expected to address sensitive issues related to maintaining state loyalty within the ranks.

Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has repeatedly emphasized that political activity will not be tolerated within the IDF. The new discipline code is set to be finalized and distributed to all commanders in the coming weeks. The decision follows recent discussions at the General Staff level, where data presented to Halevi and senior officers revealed a dramatic drop in unit discipline.

The erosion of discipline has manifested in disregard for military orders and ethical breaches, some of which have been publicly reported. For example, a soldier wearing a "Messiah" patch was sentenced to 30 days of confinement after being spotted by the Chief of Staff in northern Samaria, with his platoon commander receiving a reprimand and the company commander a formal warning. Additionally, a viral incident involved a soldier in southern Lebanon photographed inserting a cigarette into a statue of the Virgin Mary, which the IDF condemned as completely contrary to expected values. The soldier was identified and is under investigation.

Another disciplinary case involved a soldier who smashed a statue of Jesus, leading to his dismissal from combat duties and 30 days of confinement, along with the soldier who filmed the act. Six other soldiers present were also reprimanded for failing to intervene or report the incident, which the IDF described as a severe violation of military orders and organizational values.

These incidents and the overall decline in discipline have accelerated the IDF's efforts to reinforce military ethics and order through the new foundational document, underscoring the army's commitment to maintaining professionalism and political neutrality amid ongoing security challenges and the upcoming elections.
