IDF Drafts New Discipline Code Amid Sharp Decline in Soldier Conduct

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have identified a significant drop in discipline among soldiers in the field after nearly three years of continuous combat operations. This decline has prompted the military leadership to develop a new official "Foundations Document" aimed at redefining and clarifying army values and orders. The document, currently being finalized, will explicitly outline acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, particularly addressing sensitive issues related to maintaining state loyalty within the ranks ahead of upcoming elections.

The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, has repeatedly emphasized that political activity will not be tolerated within the IDF. The initiative follows recent discussions at the General Staff level, where data presented to the Chief of Staff and senior commanders revealed a dramatic erosion of discipline, including disregard for military orders and ethical lapses.

Several disciplinary incidents have underscored this trend. About two months ago, a soldier wearing a "Messiah" patch was sentenced to 30 days of imprisonment after being spotted by the Chief of Staff during a visit to northern Samaria. His squad commander received a conditional 14-day sentence, while the platoon and battalion commanders were reprimanded for their unit's conduct.

Another incident involved a soldier photographed disrespecting a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon, which sparked public outrage. The IDF located the soldier and confirmed the matter is under investigation, stressing that such behavior is completely contrary to expected values. Additionally, a viral video showed a soldier smashing a statue of Jesus; both the perpetrator and the person filming were removed from combat roles and sentenced to 30 days imprisonment. Six other soldiers present were also reprimanded for failing to intervene or report the act, which the IDF described as a severe breach of military orders and organizational values.

The new discipline document is expected to be distributed to all commanders in the coming weeks as part of efforts to restore order and uphold the IDF’s ethical standards.
