Australian Sprinter Jemma Stapleton Dies in Thailand Motorbike Crash

Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton, 25, died after falling from a motorbike during a family holiday in Thailand. The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. Her death has prompted widespread grief in Victoria’s athletics community and beyond.

Stapleton was known nationally in Australia as a talented runner who competed in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles. She also worked as a much-loved educator at a local childcare centre.

A crowdfunding campaign launched to help “bring her home” raised more than $100,000 in less than 24 hours. Her partner, Tyler, said he could not describe the pain of losing her, calling her “the best thing that ever happened to me” and saying he was grateful for the love they shared. He added, “I love you with all my heart, and I will never stop.”

Her brother, Joel, wrote that she should “rest in peace,” describing her as his best sister and best friend. Coach Craig Meyer said, “She believed this was her year,” and added that it was heartbreaking to lose someone so young, especially when she had spoken about buying a house, getting married and having children.
