Israeli Forces Arrest Suspect and Seize Thousands of Archaeological Artifacts in West Bank

Israeli security forces, including Civil Administration archaeology coordinators, Border Police, and IDF soldiers, conducted a targeted operation in the Jericho district against a suspect involved in illegal excavations and antiquities theft. The suspect was apprehended by Civil Administration inspectors and Border Police while in possession of metal detectors, excavation tools, and archaeological finds. He was detained and transferred to the archaeology intelligence and investigation unit for further questioning.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the suspect conducted unauthorized digs in Area C, uncovering ancient coins. Following intelligence developments, the archaeology unit, supported by IDF soldiers from Battalion 47, searched the suspect's home and confiscated thousands of archaeological items. These artifacts date from the Persian, Hellenistic, and Hasmonean periods.

The suspect and the seized items remain in custody of the Civil Administration's archaeology unit for ongoing investigation. Police described the operation as a significant step in disrupting the illegal antiquities trade in Judea and Samaria.
