British art icon David Hockney dies at 88
British artist David Hockney, regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in contemporary art, died on Friday at the age of 88. News of his death was first reported in the French press and later confirmed by his spokesperson in statements to the BBC and the London newspaper Evening Standard.
According to the report, Hockney died peacefully at his home on June 11, 2026. His death came just one month before what would have been his 89th birthday.
Hockney was one of the leading figures in modern art, and his works became cultural icons around the world. Among his best-known pieces are “The Splash” and “Pool with Two Figures,” both considered milestones in contemporary painting.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Hockney became known for his distinctive style, bold use of color and willingness to embrace new technologies alongside traditional techniques.
