Report: Claudio Coldebella Could Leave Maccabi Tel Aviv for Rome Project
Italian reports say Claudio Coldebella, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s sporting director since last summer, could leave after just one season and move to a new, high-profile basketball venture in Rome. According to the report published Friday morning, he is the leading candidate to take charge of the project, which is backed by NBA star Luka Doncic and former coach Don Nelson.
The Italians said Maccabi Tel Aviv denied the story, but they added that with the Israeli season nearing its end, the chances of the move are increasing and Coldebella could end up running the new team. The club in Rome is expected to aim high and to be officially unveiled on June 25, when the details of the project are supposed to be made public.
The Rome club is expected to play in the Italian league next season and is being built on the basis of another team, Cremona. The report also said the project is likely to compete in the EuroCup, the second-tier European competition, with an eye on eventual promotion to the EuroLeague.
