Trump Ally Laura Loomer Reverses Stance, Visits Kyiv and Interviews Zelenskyy
Laura Loomer, a far-right American Jewish activist closely associated with former President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, has dramatically shifted her stance on the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Previously a harsh critic of U.S. aid to Ukraine and a promoter of Russian propaganda, Loomer called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "self-hating Nazi Jew" and supported a full Russian takeover of Ukraine. However, last week she unexpectedly traveled to Kyiv, toured key sites, and conducted an extensive 45-minute interview with Zelenskyy, during which she admitted she had been "bombarded with Russian propaganda" and expressed regret for spreading false narratives favorable to Russia.
During her visit, Loomer witnessed firsthand the impact of the war, including experiencing an air raid alarm and visiting Bucha, a town symbolizing Russian atrocities. She also toured the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, recently bombed by Russia, and met with Ukraine's Chief Rabbi Moshe Azman at the Central Synagogue. Azman highlighted Loomer's admission that many of her previous views were shaped by Russian disinformation and praised her courage to see the situation personally. Loomer praised Ukrainian drone tactics and condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for attacks on cultural and religious sites.
The visit and interview were not officially arranged by the Ukrainian government, which learned of Loomer's presence through social media. Zelenskyy's office thanked her for her bravery in coming to Ukraine despite the dangers. Former President Trump shared Loomer's interview on his social media platform, calling it "very good." Loomer's shift could influence the MAGA base, which has largely opposed U.S. support for Ukraine, reflecting a possible change in the broader Republican discourse. Loomer's trip coincided with a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which yielded little progress toward peace.
Loomer funded her trip herself and declined to detail logistical arrangements. Her transformation from a staunch Russia supporter to a vocal advocate for Ukraine underscores the complex and evolving political dynamics surrounding the war. Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House soon, following talks with Trump’s envoys about revitalizing diplomacy. Loomer's visit highlights how unconventional actors can impact U.S. foreign policy narratives amid the ongoing conflict.
