Ukrainian President Zelensky Urgently Leaves Ireland Amid Intelligence Warning of Imminent Russian Attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky abruptly departed Ireland shortly after a joint press conference with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, following an intelligence alert about a planned large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine expected overnight. Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Zelensky stated he was returning immediately to Ukraine with his team due to credible intelligence indicating preparations for renewed Russian shelling. He urged Ukrainian citizens to remain vigilant, heed air raid warnings, and protect themselves and their families.
The visit to Dublin coincided with Ireland's commencement of its six-month presidency of the European Union Council. During their meeting, Zelensky and Martin discussed concerns over entities in Ireland allegedly exporting alumina to Russia, a material used in military aluminum production. Zelensky called for a swift conclusion to the Irish investigation, emphasizing that every ton of raw material reaching Russia is used against Ukraine.
This warning aligns with previous Ukrainian intelligence reports about Russia preparing a major offensive. Earlier in the week, Zelensky had warned of a possible massive Russian strike and confirmed that Ukraine's air defense systems, mobile fire units, and air force remain on high alert according to available supplies.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported a heavy Russian attack on Kyiv resulting in eight deaths and sixteen injuries after residential buildings were hit. In retaliation, Ukraine targeted Russian oil refineries and military bases, including a missile component factory near Penza, approximately 600 kilometers from the front lines.
