WhatsApp Adds Direct Parental Control Shortcut in Android Settings

WhatsApp has introduced a new shortcut for parental controls directly within the app's settings screen on Android devices. This update, appearing in the beta version 2.26.29.5, does not launch a new monitoring system but makes an existing feature more visible and accessible for families. Currently, the feature is available to a limited number of beta users, with a gradual rollout expected to reach more accounts in the coming weeks.

The parental control system, officially launched in March, allows parents to link their account to their child's, enabling them to receive notifications about certain account changes and manage contact requests from unknown numbers. The new shortcut appears under a dedicated "Parent controls" section in the settings. To activate it, parents must open this section on their device and complete the linking process on the child's phone. WhatsApp provides clear instructions and a verification step to ensure the accounts are linked with consent.

Importantly, parents do not gain access to the child's messages or calls, which remain encrypted and private. They receive alerts when a new contact is added, settings change, or a message request comes from an unknown number. The child is notified that their account is linked to a parent's account. For accounts identified as belonging to minors, WhatsApp may automatically display the relevant setup screen, and the option may appear on the login screen if the child is not yet connected, allowing parents to set controls before use.

WhatsApp has not specified when the shortcut will be available to all Android users or if a similar feature will be introduced on iOS. Users who do not see the shortcut currently are advised to update to the latest version and wait for server-side activation without reinstalling the app.
