Israeli Mother Diagnosed With Rare Nasal Cancer After Nosebleed Following Turkey Vacation Dive

Mel Frisby, a 35-year-old mother of three, experienced a nosebleed after jumping into the water during a family vacation in Turkey in 2022, which marked the start of a four-year battle with a rare and aggressive cancer. Initially mistaking the bleeding for a simple injury, Frisby's condition worsened as her nose began to deform, leading to emergency hospitalization where doctors discovered severe bone infection and deterioration. Further tests and a biopsy revealed she had stage 3 or 4 squamous cell carcinoma of the sinus.

Frisby, who had lost both parents to cancer at a young age, shared the difficult news with her children and underwent extensive treatment including multiple surgeries, removal of her nose bone, six infection treatments, 30 radiation sessions, and cartilage grafts from her ribs for nasal reconstruction. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, daily routines like brushing her children's hair gave her strength.

Two years ago, Frisby began sharing her journey on social media, where a TikTok video about her experience garnered over 16 million views. Recently, she connected with another woman diagnosed with the same cancer at 35, who helped her find a specialist surgeon. Frisby's story highlights the critical need for public awareness and early diagnosis of this rare cancer, as well as the powerful role of social media in connecting patients and providing life-saving support.
