Netanyahu Questions Intelligence Failure but Urges Shin Bet Chief to Investigate Alleged Betrayal on October 7

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed conspiracy theories about alleged betrayal within Israel's security apparatus during the October 7 Hamas attack, stating he does not believe any betrayal occurred but insists that Shin Bet chief David Zini should investigate the matter. This was revealed by Channel 14 panelist Avi Shoshan, who shared details from an upcoming podcast episode featuring Netanyahu. When asked why he is so certain there was no betrayal, Netanyahu responded that while he doubts it happened, the Shin Bet head must examine the issue.

Netanyahu has previously acknowledged a severe intelligence failure but firmly denied any betrayal during a Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee discussion six months ago. Shin Bet chief Zini also confirmed earlier this year that there was no betrayal or collaboration by security officials, though he admitted to a serious professional failure that requires ongoing correction.

The conspiracy theories have been fueled by figures such as Likud MK Tali Gottlieb, who claimed a Shin Bet officer was in contact with Hamas leaders before the attack and accused him of betrayal. These claims were refuted by the Mossad, Shin Bet, and the IDF, and Gottlieb's exposure of the officer's identity was condemned for endangering his life. A recent Shin Bet report highlighted the risks posed by such disclosures.

Additionally, false videos and misinformation circulated online, including one shared by Netanyahu's son, Yair Netanyahu, which falsely alleged internal betrayal within the Israeli Air Force. The video contained incorrect data about the Air Force's capabilities and procedures and was later deleted. Official military sources have denied these claims, emphasizing the absence of any internal betrayal during the October 7 events.

Despite repeated denials from intelligence and military officials, the persistence of these conspiracy theories continues to provoke debate and calls for thorough investigation within Israel's security community.
