Maccabi Tel Aviv Faces Frontcourt Shortage Ahead of Season Start

Maccabi Tel Aviv is confronting a significant shortage in its frontcourt roster less than a month before the new basketball season begins. The reigning champions currently have only three players for the center and forward positions: Roman Sorkin, Jalen Hurd, and TJ Leaf, with Leaf's fitness for the start of training still uncertain. The team lost Marcio Santos, who left for college despite having a contract for another season, and released Zach Hankins, who signed with a newly promoted Turkish league team. As a result, Maccabi still needs to fill two frontcourt spots, including at least one key player expected to contribute significant minutes in the EuroLeague.

During the summer, Maccabi targeted several candidates such as Kabarius Hayes, who signed with Partizan Belgrade, and Bruno Fernando, who chose Anadolu Efes over Maccabi. Rishon Holmes declined to join due to the security situation in Israel. The club also attempted to re-sign Josh Nivo, but he ultimately signed a $3 million deal with Barcelona. The current player market offers limited quality options, and the team may have to settle for a riskier choice if it cannot acquire a suitable player from another club.

Maccabi officials emphasized that financial constraints are not an issue, stating, "There is no money problem to bring any of the names currently available on the market," and that once a decision is made, the player will be signed. The club is expected to make a move on one of its target players by next week to avoid starting preparations with an incomplete frontcourt.
