Mekorot Expands Solar Capacity with Emergency Storage Facilities Across Israel
Mekorot, Israel's national water company and the country's largest electricity consumer, is significantly expanding its self-generated solar power capacity. The company has launched a tender to build 100 megawatts of solar power generation alongside 400 megawatt-hours of battery storage. These facilities will be installed on water reservoirs nationwide to support continuous water supply for domestic, agricultural, and industrial use.
Currently, Mekorot operates 28 megawatts of connected electricity capacity, including unique hydroelectric capabilities that convert water pressure in pipelines into power. The company plans to increase this capacity tenfold in the coming years to reduce electricity costs and enhance operational independence. This expansion also aims to ensure Mekorot can operate autonomously for several hours during electricity grid failures or security emergencies.
Selected developers will be responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the solar and storage systems, with Mekorot holding the first right to purchase the generated electricity for its operational needs. Any surplus electricity will be sold to the national grid at market prices. Mekorot describes the project as delivering "broad business benefits" and strengthening its critical role as a vital service provider.
Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen praised the initiative, highlighting its contribution to Israel's energy security and renewable energy targets. Mekorot's Chairman, Attorney Moshe Shimoni, called the project a "significant step" toward energy independence and operational continuity for Israel's water sector.
This move follows Mekorot's recent win in a discounted electricity tender from the Electricity Authority, further supporting its strategy to expand renewable energy use and reduce reliance on the national grid.
