Rafael Unveils Proven LITENING 5 Pod to Enhance Drone Interception Capabilities

Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is set to showcase its LITENING 5 targeting pod at the Farnborough Airshow 2026 in London. The system is designed to improve operational responses against drones by significantly reducing the time between initial detection and interception. As the most widely used targeting pod globally, LITENING 5 is installed on over 25 aircraft types and employed by 28 air forces worldwide.

The LITENING 5 pod supports automatic detection, tracking, identification, laser designation, and precise weapon guidance, enhancing the ability to counter low-signature threats such as drones. Its electro-optical tracker and laser marking enable the use of various interception weapons, including radar-guided missiles, heat-seeking missiles, and laser-guided rockets. Over the years, the system has contributed to hundreds of successful drone interceptions in active combat zones.

Recently, the German Air Force selected the LITENING 5 pod for its Eurofighter Typhoon fleet, with the Bundestag approving the purchase of 90 units. Rafael emphasizes that the pod's widespread deployment is based on operational experience and field feedback, with each new generation expanding capabilities while maintaining compatibility with existing combat systems.

Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman highlighted the critical importance of rapid identification and precise targeting in drone warfare, stating, "Recent wars have proven that in the drone arena, speed of detection and accuracy of strike are the difference between a neutralized threat and ongoing risk." He added that the LITENING 5 integrates advanced sensors, algorithms, and precise guidance to enable fighter jets to effectively counter fast, small, and complex threats.
