Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister, Promises Economic Reform and Tougher Israel Policy

Andy Burnham is set to become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom today, replacing Keir Starmer who resigned amid internal party rebellion and plummeting public support. Burnham, a charismatic and popular politician, previously served as the Mayor of Manchester, where he earned the nickname "King of the North" for his outspoken criticism of government policies during the COVID-19 pandemic and his efforts to boost the local economy.

At 56, Burnham has a long political career, having started as an aide to a South London MP after graduating in English literature from Cambridge. He was elected to Parliament at 31 and held various ministerial roles in Labour governments, including in the Treasury, Culture, and Health departments. Despite two unsuccessful bids for Labour leadership since 2010, his popularity surged during his Manchester mayoralty.

Burnham plans to focus on revitalizing the UK economy with a "new kind of economy" and aims to ease the cost-of-living crisis, as he will outline in his first speech outside 10 Downing Street. He also intends to continue and possibly intensify the Labour Party's critical stance toward Israel, including imposing new sanctions and considering bans on trade with settlements. He apologized for Labour's initial response to Israel's military actions in Gaza and committed to doing better under his leadership.

While Burnham acknowledges evidence of war crimes in Gaza, he refrains from labeling Israel's actions as genocide, leaving that determination to international courts. He has reassured British Jewish communities by condemning antisemitism and Hamas's October 7 attacks, emphasizing his longstanding friendship with Israel and the Jewish community. Burnham's leadership marks the fifth UK prime minister in four years and represents a shift toward a younger, more populist image compared to his predecessor.
