Israel's Electricity Authority Halts Data Center Connection Approvals Amid Grid Overload

Data centers consume massive amounts of electricity, and Israel's already strained power grid is facing challenges accommodating the surge in new data center projects. The Israel Electricity Authority announced it has so far committed to about 1,500 megawatts of connections for data centers, which would represent 10 percent of the country's electricity consumption by the early 2030s, positioning Israel as a global leader in this sector. However, recent requests for connections have skyrocketed to 27,000 megawatts, equivalent to roughly three times the average national electricity consumption. To avoid outright rejection of all applicants, the authority has imposed a 140-day freeze on processing new connection requests for data centers to reassess the situation.

The Israeli power grid has been under excessive strain due to years of neglect, with improvements only beginning in recent years. Meanwhile, Avi Simhon, chairman of the National Economic Council, is promoting legislation to designate data centers as national infrastructure, which would streamline their planning and development. Despite these efforts, it remains uncertain whether the electricity grid can handle the growing demand from the data center industry in the near future.
