Organized Scam Targets Tourist Drivers Across Europe with Tire Damage and Theft

A growing scam targeting tourist drivers renting cars in Europe has been spreading from Slovenia and Croatia to France and Spain. Criminal networks deliberately puncture tires of rental vehicles, often those with foreign license plates, while drivers are distracted during short stops at rest areas or parking lots. Once the driver returns to the road and the tire deflates or bursts, they are forced to pull over.

At this vulnerable moment, scammers posing as Good Samaritans or roadside helpers approach the stranded driver offering assistance. While the driver is distracted by the staged emergency, accomplices quietly steal valuables such as wallets, passports, and electronic devices from inside the vehicle. Some reports indicate that more aggressive criminals use digital signal jammers to block mobile phone reception, preventing victims from contacting emergency services or insurance providers.

Authorities and regional automobile clubs warn travelers to inspect tires visually after every unsupervised stop and to remain cautious if strangers offer help. Drivers are advised to keep doors locked, communicate through partially opened windows, and contact official police or roadside assistance directly. Additionally, valuables should never be left visible inside the car, even during urgent roadside stops.

Law enforcement has identified high-risk areas along major transport routes, especially between Zagreb and Rijeka in Croatia, as well as in Serbia, Italy, France, and Spain. The scam exploits tourists’ unfamiliarity with local emergency procedures, language barriers, and the stress of sudden mechanical issues. Security experts emphasize skepticism toward unexpected helpers as the best defense against falling victim to these costly scams that can ruin vacations before they begin.
