Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Aharon Barak Defends Haredi Draft Law and Reflects on Legal Career

Aharon Barak, former President of the Israeli Supreme Court, met with Rabbi Ido Ver-Arlich to discuss sensitive legal and current issues, including the Haredi draft crisis, recent arrests of yeshiva students, his judicial career, and the Netanyahu trial. He clarified that the law was not canceled due to the Haredi community but because the military was unprepared to enforce it, stating, "The army was not ready to control it, so the arrangements in the Tal Law were not realized." When asked about mistakes in his judicial rulings, Barak acknowledged errors but emphasized the scale of his work, having issued 34,000 rulings over his career. He declined to specify particular cases but noted that mistakes are inevitable.

On the ongoing Netanyahu trial, Barak said he was not involved in the evidence but acknowledged that if judges expressed concerns about proving bribery in Case 4000, the prosecution should consider their views. He stressed that while judges should not publicly comment on such matters, the prosecution must take their opinions into account.
