Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Urges Maintaining Cleanliness and Respect During Nine Days of Mourning

During the Nine Days of mourning the destruction of the Temple, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l issued a strong call to uphold personal hygiene and respect for others, criticizing excessive stringencies regarding bathing. In his sermon, Rabbi Yosef clarified that Jewish law only prohibits bathing on Tisha B'Av itself, not throughout the entire Nine Days. He highlighted the difference between customary practices and halachic rulings, noting that Sephardic tradition permits bathing even with warm water during this period.

Rabbi Yosef condemned the extreme stringencies that lead to unpleasant odors and discomfort for others, citing the example of people in Bnei Brak who refrain from bathing and thus cause distress to those nearby. He emphasized that such practices are not mandated by the Torah and disrespect others. While Ashkenazi communities traditionally avoid bathing during the entire Nine Days due to colder climates, Rabbi Yosef attempted to ease restrictions for workers who sweat, but faced opposition from Ashkenazi authorities.

He sharply criticized those who impose stricter rules than the Torah requires, calling them "stubborn" and urging moderation and common sense. Rabbi Yosef concluded by encouraging adherence to ancestral customs, allowing bathing as usual during the Nine Days except on Tisha B'Av itself. He also noted that women preparing for ritual immersion or those accustomed to regular immersion may continue their practices throughout the period except on the fast day.
