Iran Targets Jordan With Multiple Attacks Following US Military Buildup

In recent weeks, Jordan has become a primary target for Iranian military attacks following an increased US military presence in the country. Over five days, Iran launched four attacks on American bases in Jordan, killing two US soldiers, injuring dozens, and leaving one soldier missing. These attacks mark a significant escalation as Jordan has grown in strategic importance for the US in the region.

The Pentagon shifted forces from Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to Jordan and Israel, considering them safer locations amid regional tensions. Some Gulf allies restricted US military operations on their soil, further elevating Jordan's role as a central hub for American military activity. Jordan already hosts key US airbases, including King Faisal Airbase and Muwaffaq Salti Airbase.

The Iranian attacks targeted multiple sites: a residential area at King Faisal Airbase where five soldiers were wounded; a base in eastern Jordan housing US Black Hawk helicopters, which sustained heavy damage; and Muwaffaq Salti Airbase in Azraq, where missile strikes injured about 20 US soldiers seeking shelter. This surge in Iranian aggression reflects Jordan's rising strategic significance amid the ongoing regional conflict.

US officials speaking to The New York Times emphasized that Jordan's importance increased sharply at the start of the conflict, prompting the redeployment of forces. The escalation underscores the heightened risks facing US personnel in Jordan and the broader Middle East as Tehran intensifies its military campaign against American interests.
