US-Iran Tensions Do Not Yet Threaten Civil Flights at Tel Aviv Airport

Despite escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, civilian flights at Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) in Israel remain unaffected for now. Recent reports of American refueling aircraft and fighter jets arriving in the Middle East, including Israel, have raised concerns, but these military planes have been stationed at Israeli Air Force bases rather than the civilian airport. Israeli transportation officials are prepared to accommodate military aircraft at Ben Gurion if the situation changes.

Last week, the US temporarily halted the removal of refueling planes stationed at Ben Gurion, leading to additional military aircraft landing at the civilian airport. This caused a shortage of parking spaces for planes, threatening to disrupt approximately 50,000 flight tickets in July. However, the Israeli cabinet resolved the issue by deciding to reduce the number of American refueling planes at Ben Gurion to 20 by July 21, with the remainder relocated to Israeli Defense Forces bases.

This development comes during the busiest period at Ben Gurion, with expectations that over 80,000 passengers will pass through daily by the end of the month, and some days exceeding that number. Authorities continue to monitor the security situation closely, acknowledging that any deterioration or spillover of conflict into Israel could immediately impact civilian air travel.
