US-Iran Tensions So Far Do Not Threaten Civil Flights at Tel Aviv Airport

Despite rising security tensions between the United States and Iran, there is currently no impact on civilian flights at Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv). Recent reports of American refueling aircraft and fighter jets arriving in the Middle East, including Israel, have led to the relocation of most US military planes and tankers to Israeli Air Force bases rather than the civilian airport.

Israeli transportation officials remain prepared to accommodate additional aircraft at Ben Gurion if the situation changes. However, they also acknowledge the possibility that escalating conflict could spread to Israel, which would immediately affect Israeli flights. Last week, the US froze the removal of refueling tankers stationed at Ben Gurion, with four additional tankers landing at the civilian airport. This caused concerns over parking space shortages for aircraft starting July 23, potentially impacting around 50,000 flight tickets monthly.

The issue was resolved when the Israeli cabinet decided to reduce the number of US tankers at Ben Gurion to 20 by July 21, with the remaining approximately ten tankers moved to military bases allocated by the Defense Ministry. This adjustment comes during Ben Gurion's busiest period, with expectations that over 80,000 passengers will pass through daily by the end of the month, and some days seeing even higher numbers.
