US-Iran Tensions Raise Travel Alerts but No Immediate Threat to Flights at Ben Gurion Airport

Amid escalating security tensions between the United States and Iran, the US has issued a travel warning for its citizens in Israel. Recent reports indicate that additional refueling and combat aircraft have been deployed to the Middle East, including Israel. However, these military planes have so far landed at Israeli Air Force bases, and there is currently no risk of civilian flight cancellations at Ben Gurion Airport.

The Israeli Ministry of Transportation is prepared to accommodate more aircraft at Ben Gurion if circumstances change. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for the conflict to escalate and directly affect Israeli air travel. Last week, the US decided to freeze the evacuation of refueling aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion, and four more refueling planes landed at the civilian airport.

This led to concerns from Sharon Kadmi, CEO of the Israel Airports Authority, who warned Transport Minister Moshe Ben Zaken that starting July 23, there would be a shortage of parking stands for aircraft, potentially impacting around 50,000 flight tickets monthly. The issue was resolved when the Israeli cabinet agreed to reduce the number of US refueling planes at Ben Gurion to 20 by July 21, relocating about ten others to IDF bases designated by the Ministry of Defense.

This development occurs during the busiest period at Ben Gurion, with daily passenger numbers expected to exceed 80,000 by the end of the month. Authorities continue monitoring the situation closely, ready to respond to any changes that might affect civilian air traffic.
