Iran Earns $6 Billion from Oil Sales After US Sanctions Lifted, Boosting Economic Resilience

Iran capitalized on the temporary lifting of US sanctions in June to sell approximately 70 million barrels of oil, generating between $5 billion and $6 billion in revenue. This surge in oil exports, primarily to China, was facilitated by around 20 oil tankers operating over the past month. The oil shipments traveled from Iran to the east coast of Malaysia, where the cargo was transferred via large pipelines at sea to other vessels that continued to China, a tactic designed to evade US tracking efforts.

These earnings provide Iran with a significant economic lifeline, enhancing its ability to withstand the renewed US sanctions reimposed last week by the Trump administration. The sanctions, reinstated after the collapse of a prior agreement, include a naval blockade aimed at preventing ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports to strangle Tehran's oil-dependent economy.

Analysts from the United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) organization and energy experts highlighted the rapid increase in Iran's oil exports during the sanction-free period, noting that if the sanctions had remained in place, the economic pressure on Iran would already be more severe. Charlie Brown, a UANI analyst, told the Wall Street Journal that the temporary sanction relief created a significant buffer for Iran.

The US naval presence in the Arabian Sea now enforces the blockade, aiming to cut off Iran's oil exports and weaken its economy. However, Iran's recent oil sales have temporarily bolstered its financial position amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
