Pro-Palestinian Actor Javier Bardem in Talks to Star in Alma Har'el's New Film

Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem, known for his outspoken pro-Palestinian stance in Hollywood, is reportedly in negotiations to star in a new feature film by Israeli-American director Alma Har'el. The project, titled "Wet," is described as an original family drama reminiscent of HBO's "Succession" and the Oscar-nominated film "Triangle of Sadness." Although talks are ongoing and no contracts have been signed yet, sources indicate Bardem is seriously considering joining the film.

This potential collaboration is notable given Bardem's previous activism, including signing a petition last September pledging not to work with Israeli film institutions accused of involvement in "genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people." Bardem clarified in a CNN interview that his boycott targets organizations, not individuals or groups based on nationality, religion, or gender. According to reports, Bardem and Har'el have found a shared creative language despite their differing backgrounds.

Alma Har'el, a 50-year-old Tel Aviv-born indie documentary filmmaker and music video director, gained international acclaim with her 2019 narrative debut "Honey Boy," starring Shia LaBeouf, which premiered at Sundance. Her upcoming projects have drawn considerable interest, especially after directing the 2024 Apple TV+ drama "Lady in the Lake," starring Natalie Portman. Neither Har'el nor their Hollywood agency WME has commented on the Bardem negotiations.

The film "Wet" remains largely under wraps, with details about its plot and production timeline yet to be disclosed. This collaboration could mark a significant moment in bridging artistic and political divides within the film industry.
