US Concludes Eight-Day Airstrikes on Iran Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday morning the completion of an eight-day series of airstrikes targeting Iran. These strikes aimed to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to swiftly retaliate against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces responsible for attacks on US troops in Jordan. The US military targeted coastal observation and air defense sites, naval capabilities, and missile and drone storage facilities linked to the IRGC.
The escalation follows the death of two US soldiers in an Iranian attack on Jordan, with dozens more reported injured in recent days. Iran reported strikes on the port city of Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and other southern cities. The IRGC claimed to have launched suicide drone attacks on US military targets in two bases in Kuwait, hitting an ammunition depot and radar systems. Additionally, a drone was intercepted near the US consulate in Erbil, Iraq.
Israel is closely monitoring the escalating conflict but assesses Iran is avoiding direct missile attacks on Israeli territory to prevent Israel's entry into the conflict. The US has discouraged Israeli involvement despite Israel's offer to join the strikes. Meanwhile, the US is reinforcing its air combat presence in the region, deploying F-16s from Germany and F-35 stealth fighters from the UK, capable of targeting Iranian radar systems. US refueling aircraft have also been sent to Israeli airbases to support operations.
The US State Department issued a global travel advisory citing increased risks due to rising tensions and potential Iranian-backed attacks on US interests worldwide. The conflict has seen Iran expand attacks across the Middle East, including Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman, targeting US bases and critical infrastructure such as power plants and oil facilities.
Since the resumption of hostilities on February 28, 16 US soldiers have been killed, including two in the recent Jordan attack. US officials noted Iran's improved missile capabilities and evasive tactics against US air defenses, possibly aided by Chinese or Russian technology. Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei condemned the US for violating ceasefire agreements and warned of continued resistance. Israel is preparing for rapid escalation scenarios and potential proxy attacks by Hezbollah and other groups.
Summary: The US has ended an eight-day campaign of airstrikes against Iranian military targets in response to attacks on US forces in Jordan, with Iran retaliating across the Middle East. Israel remains on alert but is currently not directly involved. The conflict has resulted in multiple US casualties and heightened regional tensions.
