Israeli Grandmother Sells Apartment Under TikTok Scam, Legal Battle Ensues

A woman in her 70s in Israel sold her apartment without informing her family, influenced by a mysterious young singer she believed she was in love with on TikTok. The granddaughter, Daniela Alluf, recounted how her grandmother was convinced by a figure named Simon (a pseudonym), a relatively unknown singer targeting mainly the Russian-speaking audience, that he was hospitalized and needed financial help. Despite family warnings, the grandmother continued communicating with unknown individuals in Russian and eventually sold her sole apartment at a price far below market value. She told her family she planned to move to Eilat with her "young boyfriend."

The family intervened after a bank alerted them to suspicious transactions involving hundreds of thousands of shekels. A psychiatric evaluation diagnosed the grandmother with erotomania, a delusional disorder where the patient believes someone is in love with them, making her vulnerable to financial exploitation. Legal guardianship was assigned to her family, and with the help of the Ministry of Justice's legal aid unit, the sale was canceled before completion, and the money was not transferred.
