US Air Force Tanker Planes to Station at Israeli Airbases Amid Regional Tensions

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that American refueling aircraft will be stationed at Israeli Air Force bases instead of Ben Gurion Airport. This decision, coordinated with the IDF, aims to reduce disruption to civilian transportation routes and is driven by operational considerations. The move follows an escalation in regional tensions, particularly increased Iranian attacks, prompting the US to bolster its military presence in Israel by sending dozens of refueling planes.

Reports indicate that within the next 24 hours, ten US tanker planes are expected to arrive in Israel, marking a shift from previous deployments that used Ben Gurion Airport. The airport authority had warned last month that the presence of US military aircraft at the civilian airport was causing significant disruptions, potentially forcing airlines to cancel over 200,000 tickets for July and August, including millions for the upcoming holiday season. Although an agreement was reached to limit US military parking at the airport to 20 planes, recent escalations led the US to freeze this arrangement, causing friction between the two sides.

Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced a ban on additional US tanker planes parking at Ben Gurion Airport. The US justified the presence of these aircraft as a "vital component of regional deterrence and defense." A military source supported the US position, calling the planes a "strategic asset." Ultimately, the decision was escalated to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The heightened tensions have seen retaliatory attacks by Iran against regional states hosting US forces. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan experienced missile and drone alerts, with Kuwait and Jordan reporting interceptions of incoming projectiles. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that countries hosting US forces must be prepared for retaliatory responses and activate civil defense measures to protect civilians.
