Jensen Huang’s Leather Jacket Sells for Nearly $1 Million at Sotheby’s Auction
A leather jacket worn by Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, sold for an astonishing $960,000 at a Sotheby’s auction, far exceeding the initial estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. The jacket, designed by Tom Ford and part of a series Huang has worn for nearly 20 years, originally retails for around $10,000. Huang wore this specific jacket in 2023 at a Foxconn event in Taipei, Taiwan.
The high sale price reflects growing collector interest in historical memorabilia linked to the AI boom. Sotheby’s reported that 45 different bidders competed for the jacket, with Brahm Wachter, head of modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, stating the response surpassed their highest expectations. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to a philanthropic initiative supporting the Edge Institute, a nonprofit focused on innovation, funding scholarships, grants, and visa programs.
Huang has humorously referred to his leather jackets as his "founder’s uniform," mentioning in a 2023 podcast that his wife and daughter pick his outfits. In a 2016 Reddit discussion, he described himself as "the guy in the leather jacket." This sale highlights the cultural and financial value collectors place on items associated with influential tech figures during the AI era.
