China Forms International AI Coalition to Challenge US Leadership
Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined China's ambitions to rival the United States as the global leader in artificial intelligence during a speech at the AI conference in Shanghai on Friday. He emphasized the need for broad international cooperation while warning of the risks associated with AI technology. Xi announced plans to offer training and support to developing countries to help build their AI capabilities.
The day before, nearly 30 countries, including Russia, Brazil, and Indonesia, joined a new organization called the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). Xi described this coalition as a historic milestone in AI development, which is expected to give Beijing greater influence over international AI standards. This move comes as China's large language models increasingly compete with American counterparts for global impact.
Analysts noted that member countries hope aligning with China will allow them to benefit from its growing technological power. Xi framed the coalition as a response to the global South's call for unity and stressed that AI development should be a "symphony of international cooperation," not a solo effort by any single nation. This was Xi's first participation in the Shanghai AI conference.
Additionally, China is integrating AI into its diplomatic efforts, particularly targeting developing economies to draw them closer into its economic sphere of influence. Xi announced 5,000 training opportunities and seminars on AI for developing countries over the next five years and plans to establish international centers for AI application cooperation.
