Autistic Lieutenant Gal Breaks Barriers as First from Autism Class to IDF Officer
Gal, a 16-year-old autistic youth and judo practitioner since age five, faced social exclusion in school due to his autism but aspired to serve in the Israel Defense Forces like everyone else. In late 2020, following his emotional video plea, Brigadier General Amir Vadmani approved the "Titchadmu" program to recruit young people on the autism spectrum for mandatory military service, despite initial resistance. By December 2024, Gal fulfilled his dream by becoming the first officer from a specialized autism class at the IDF Officer Training School (Bahad 1).
Throughout his service, Gal demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership, overcoming social isolation and anxiety. He endured multiple review committees when facing potential dismissal from the officer course but was ultimately retained after persistent advocacy by himself and his employment integration mentor, Uri Shachaf. Gal’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Oron, praised his eagerness to help others and his determination to succeed, including passing challenging exams after initial difficulties.
Gal’s role in the Home Front Command involves overseeing life-saving early warning alert systems on mobile phones, a position of significant responsibility. He also became the first autistic soldier in the program to receive weapons training, fulfilling his desire to serve fully as an IDF officer. His journey was documented by Captain Udi Heller, founder of the "Titchadmu" program, who highlighted that the main challenge was not autism itself but the interface between the individual and the military system.
Gal credits his success to supportive commanders and mentors who believed in him despite the military’s conservative culture. His story exemplifies how inclusion and accommodation can enable autistic individuals to contribute meaningfully to Israel’s defense and society. A free webinar on July 20, 2026, will discuss autism integration in the IDF, featuring Captain Heller.
Summary: Gal, an autistic Israeli youth, overcame social and institutional challenges to become the first officer from a specialized autism class in the IDF, proving the potential of autistic soldiers to serve with distinction.
