Former Minister Matan Kahana Accuses Finance Minister Smotrich of Spreading Lies Amid Party Rift
Former Israeli minister Matan Kahana, now with the Yisrael party led by Gadi Eisenkot, sharply criticized Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich following Smotrich's remarks at the Tekuma movement's national conference in Tel Aviv. Smotrich had attacked Eisenkot, warning that he would dismantle the West Bank settlements and framed the upcoming election as a choice between a national government and a left-wing one. Kahana accused Smotrich of fear over a wave of defections within his party and of irresponsibly spreading falsehoods and incitement against Eisenkot, a retired IDF general who has dedicated his life to Israel's security.
Kahana further blamed Smotrich for his role in the events of October 7, accusing him of treating Hamas as an asset, failing to recognize the threat of the Nukhba unit, and supporting divisive legislation against Eisenkot. This exchange highlights growing tensions between Yisrael and the Religious Zionist Party as the election approaches. Recent polls show Yisrael gaining strength with 22 seats, positioning it as a leading center-left alternative, while the current coalition bloc has weakened to 58 seats.
Kahana, who joined the national camp about four years ago, has praised Eisenkot’s leadership and capabilities as what Israel needs now. He is also preparing his party’s education platform ahead of the elections, criticizing current Education Minister Yoav Kish. Kahana has recently clashed with media figures over his criticism of Prime Minister Netanyahu. He concluded his response by urging Smotrich to stop inciting division.
