Israeli Police Prepare to Block Highway 4 for Protest by Extreme Haredi Group Against Draft Arrests

The Israeli police are set to block Highway 4 between the Aluf Sadeh and Em HaMoshavot interchanges starting at 4:00 PM on July 16, 2026, ahead of a planned protest at 5:00 PM by a group known as the "Hertzafnikim." This group consists of students of Rabbi Zvi Friedman who split from the Jerusalem Faction and are considered more extreme within the ultra-Orthodox community. The demonstration is in protest against the arrests of draft evaders.

Authorities anticipate significant traffic congestion and possible additional roadblocks on Zabotinsky Street in Bnei Brak. Police from the Dan district will be deployed to direct traffic and maintain public order. The police have urged drivers to avoid the affected areas and use alternative routes.

The Israeli police emphasized their recognition of the right to protest as a democratic cornerstone but warned they will not tolerate disorder or disruptions to public movement that could endanger safety. This protest follows previous demonstrations by the same group, including a recent incident where protesters blocked Geha Road in the morning and were forcibly removed by police. That event drew political criticism, including from Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who attempted to dismiss the police commander involved after a controversial video showed the commander lifting a protester, resulting in the protester's pants being torn.

The police remain vigilant to prevent disruptions and ensure public safety during the upcoming protest.
