MK Simcha Rothman published a photo from the Religious Zionism party platform and explained that the principle underlying the Basic Law: Torah Study is not a new idea that was born out of the recent agreements with the ultra-Orthodox factions. According to him, the value of Torah study as a fundamental value in the State of Israel appeared explicitly in the party platform on the basis of which the list’s members were elected to the Knesset. This comes after MK Moshe Solomon was removed from all Knesset committees following his vote against the law, contrary to the faction’s position.
MK Simcha Rothman published a photo this evening (Wednesday) from the Religious Zionism party platform in the last election, in an effort to reinforce the party leadership’s position on the Basic Law: Torah Study and the internal crisis created after MK Moshe Solomon opposed the law. Alongside the image, Rothman wrote: “Photo from the Religious Zionism party platform in the election. Loyal to the path,” and attached the names of the list members who supported the law, while omitting the name of MK Moshe Solomon, who opposed the law against the party’s position.

In the excerpt published by Rothman, it says that the value of Torah study should be enshrined as a Basic Law that will prevent harm to the status of Torah learners and allow due weight to be given to Torah study in constitutional discourse. It also noted that regulating the status of Torah learners would help preserve the way of life of yeshiva students and kollel students and would prevent, according to the text, harm to the world of Torah and its contribution to the State of Israel.
Rothman’s post comes against the backdrop of the sharp confrontation that developed within the Religious Zionism faction after MK Moshe Solomon voted against the Basic Law: Torah Study, even though the party says he took part in the discussions held on the matter and knew of the agreements reached with the coalition and the ultra-Orthodox factions.

In the party’s statement after the vote, it was reported that earlier in the week a faction meeting was held in which a joint position was formulated, according to which the Religious Zionism party’s support for the law would be conditional on deleting the comparison between Torah learners and those serving in military service. According to the party, the demand was presented to the coalition and accepted, and the law was amended accordingly. It was further claimed that Solomon was aware of all stages of the process and did not express opposition until the moment of the vote.
Religious Zionism attacked Solomon’s conduct and claimed that he acted on his own, did not inform the party leadership in advance of his intention to vote against it, and surprised his faction colleagues. As a result, the party chairman, Minister Bezalel Smotrich, decided to remove Solomon from all Knesset committees on which he serves on behalf of the faction.

For his part, Solomon rejected the criticism and said he acted out of commitment to the values of the public that sent him to the Knesset. According to him, he cannot support a law that, in his view, sends the message that there is no need to combine Torah with military service. He said that מאז the outbreak of the war he has accompanied many bereaved families from the Religious Zionism community and buried dozens of students from hesder yeshivas, higher yeshivas and preparatory academies, and therefore could not vote for the law.
