Israel Under-21 Handball Team Falls 33-31 to Faroe Islands, Moves to Placement Matches
The Israeli Under-21 national handball team lost 33-31 to the Faroe Islands on Thursday, dropping to the 13th-16th place classification matches at the World Championship qualifiers. Israel will face Iceland next in the placement rounds, still needing one more win to qualify for the World Championship.
Israel started strong with Tal Ekstein scoring three early goals to lead 3-0. Although the Faroese quickly equalized, Guy Resh Arman scored to regain the lead. Despite several missed shots, Israel maintained a promising 15-17 advantage at halftime, with Ekstein contributing heavily.
The second half saw a decline in Israel’s performance as the Faroe Islands quickly leveled the score at 18-18 and then took the lead. Despite saves by goalkeeper Eitan Elbaz and goals by Asaf Sharon, Israel struggled with many missed opportunities, falling behind 31-26 by the 55th minute. Although Israel narrowed the gap to 31-29, they could not recover.
Top scorers for Israel included Tal Ekstein with 10 goals, Asaf Sharon with 7, and Yonatan Pelech with 5. Goalkeepers Eitan Elbaz and Yehonatan Benshtrit made 8 and 7 saves respectively. The team remains in contention for World Championship qualification if they win one of their next two matches.
