Real Madrid Unveils New Captaincy Lineup Under Mourinho for 2026/27 Season
Real Madrid is entering a new era not only with the return of coach José Mourinho but also with a revamped leadership structure in the locker room ahead of the 2026/27 season. Following the departure of Dani Carvajal, the club has announced its new captaincy hierarchy. According to the Spanish outlet AS, Federico Valverde will serve as the team's first captain, followed by Vinícius Júnior, Thibaut Courtois, and Rodrygo.
Mourinho, who has already begun preparations for his second tenure at the club, met early on with Courtois and Rodrygo, both currently recovering from injuries but expected to play key leadership roles. Valverde’s promotion aligns with Real Madrid’s long-standing tradition of appointing the most senior player in the first team as captain. The Uruguayan midfielder joined the club in 2016, spent time with the reserves and on loan at Deportivo La Coruña, and has been a first-team regular since 2018.
For Valverde, becoming captain fulfills a personal ambition he expressed as early as 2023. Now entering his ninth season with the senior squad, he has earned this prestigious role. Vinícius Júnior’s rise to second captain reflects the club’s preference for a field player to represent the team in interactions with referees under new game regulations. Courtois, previously higher in the hierarchy, will be the third captain, with Rodrygo completing the leadership quartet.
This new captaincy order comes after a summer of significant changes at Real Madrid, including Carvajal’s exit and Mourinho’s return as head coach. Alongside shifts in the coaching staff and squad, the club hopes the fresh leadership will help restore Real Madrid’s competitiveness for all major trophies. Mourinho regards Valverde as a cornerstone of the new project, confident in his ability to lead both on and off the pitch in the upcoming season.
