DNA Test Reveals Two Babies Switched at Birth in North Dakota Nearly 40 Years Ago
Two families in North Dakota have filed a lawsuit against Unity Medical Center in Grafton, alleging that hospital staff mistakenly switched two male newborns on January 26, 1988. The infants, Kyle Bailin and Jeremy Morrison, were the only babies born at the hospital that day. The shocking discovery came about two years ago when Morrison, now living in Colorado, took a DNA test and found that his biological parents were not the ones who raised him. Further testing confirmed that Bailin is the nephew of Morrison's biological aunt.
Morrison shared that he always felt different from his family, describing himself as a blond child among relatives with brown hair. Since the revelation, both sets of parents have met with their biological sons, but the two men have not yet met each other. The plaintiffs are seeking damages exceeding $50,000 and have requested a jury trial.
The hospital denies the allegations, stating that its staff exercised appropriate skill, care, and judgment at all times. Unity Medical Center's lawyers also argue that the lawsuit may be barred by the statute of limitations due to the long time elapsed since the alleged incident. The hospital noted that nearly four decades have passed, and relevant medical records and staff from that period are no longer available. They expressed a commitment to better understand this highly unusual situation involving two men who were apparently separated from their biological parents at some point in their lives.
