Eliyahu Yosian Shares His Journey From Iranian Jewish Childhood to Israeli Public Figure
Eliyahu Yosian, an expert and commentator on Iranian affairs, recounted his life story in a podcast interview with Hadar Miller on Channel 7. Born and raised in Iran, Yosian described his childhood education within a Muslim school system, where he studied alongside Muslim peers and even took Islamic religious classes to better understand his environment. Despite some social integration, he faced discrimination, particularly from devout Muslims who viewed Jewish minorities as "impure." He noted that Jews who strictly maintained their identity and lifestyle often struggled more socially, creating gaps that affected their treatment in schools.
Yosian explained that these early experiences shaped his worldview, leading him to believe that "in the Middle East, there is no room for losing." This perspective continues to influence his views on Israel’s security situation, emphasizing that victory is essential for deterrence and status in the region. At age 23, Yosian immigrated to Israel in 2003, choosing not to remain in Iran. He described initial challenges in Israel and his decision to volunteer for military service in the Israel Defense Forces despite having a medical exemption.
He served extensively in Unit 8200 after his family’s immigration allowed him to complete security clearance. Later, as he became a recognized media figure, Yosian left military service when asked to choose between continuing his service or pursuing public activism. He chose the latter, expressing a desire to influence public discourse and considering a future in politics. He stated, "If we want to implement what we believe in, ultimately it must happen through politics."
