Filipino-Born Israeli Singer Overcomes Racism, Converts to Judaism, and Fights Prejudice
Yosef Haavi Danao, born as Haavi to a Filipino domestic worker in northern Tel Aviv, shares his extraordinary life journey from identity struggles to becoming a Jewish fighter against racism. His biological mother came to Israel from the Philippines to work as a housekeeper and discovered she was pregnant. Instead of sending her back, the Jewish secular family she worked for decided to raise the child alongside her, becoming Yosef's adoptive parents. Despite their love and care, Yosef faced harsh racism and social exclusion outside the home, being the only Filipino child in his area and enduring bullying and isolation from a young age.
Growing up caught between cultures, Yosef felt alienated from both Israeli society and his mother's Christian faith. Music became his refuge, leading him to perform publicly and eventually reach the national spotlight as a contestant on the Israeli reality show "The Next Star," where he advanced to the semifinals. However, he soon realized the entertainment industry’s superficiality and felt a deep emptiness despite his success.
Yosef’s turning point came during his military service in the Israel Defense Forces, where he struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts due to his lack of belonging. His perspective shifted after joining the "Nativ" course, an identity program for soldiers not recognized as Jewish, where he connected with other minorities and explored Jewish history and his adoptive family's Holocaust survivor background. He embraced Judaism not as a religion but as a national and cultural identity, ultimately converting and choosing the Hebrew name Yosef, inspired by the biblical Joseph.
Today, Yosef is married, builds a Jewish home in Israel, and continues to create soulful music that uplifts listeners. Despite ongoing experiences of racism, even within religious communities, he views his mission as breaking down shallow divisions and teaching others to see beyond skin color and origin. Yosef’s story is one of resilience, identity, and hope, reflecting broader societal challenges and the power of personal transformation.
